How to Get a Golf Scholarship – Tips for Students Aiming for College Golf

The next step after completing our full-time golf and academic program is securing a golf scholarship at a top U.S. university, where you can continue your higher education while competing at an elite level. The process may seem very complicated, but it’s actually not. So, what do you need to know?

Understand the Requirements for Golf Scholarships

Each university or golf program may have different scholarship requirements. Some scholarships are awarded based solely on athletic performance, while others may require a combination of golf performance and academic excellence. Generally, the main requirements for applying for a golf scholarship include:

  • Golf Performance: High scores in tournaments and consistency in your play. Universities typically look at your golf handicap and official national or international rankings.

  • Academic Standing: A solid GPA (average grades) and standardized test scores (such as SAT or ACT). Most universities require a certain GPA for scholarship eligibility (the last 4 years of school are taken into consideration). Keeping up with your studies will ensure that you meet this requirement. Balancing academics with golf training and tournaments shows discipline and time management—qualities that are highly valued by college recruiters.

  • Coach Recommendation: Letters of recommendation from your golf coach or other sports professionals who can vouch for your skill and character.

  • Application and Documentation: Most universities will require you to complete an application and provide your golf resume, academic transcripts, and possibly video footage. The easiest way to navigate this process is to work with a specialized partner. There are many agencies today that can help you search for universities and handle the application process. They gather all the necessary documentation and handle the administrative work, for a certain fee, of course.
